In the studio

My band, Single Girl, Married Girl, and I are getting ready to record an EP in the early summer, but we need to have solid demos first. Yesterday, we met up at 21st Century Recording Studio in Silverlake to give it a go!

WE’RE DOING IT!!! I Still can’t believe we’re doing it!

My husband and I recently found out that we will be making the move from Southern California to New York City this Fall for his work. I have ALWAYS wanted to live in NYC, so this comes as a welcome change.

As a true Southern Californian (Born and raised), I am a little sad to be leaving some things behind, like the weather, friends, and family. However, I am not going to miss the traffic (we won’t have a car!!)

I am really looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life, and I plan to fully embrace the night-life, music scene, food, and public transportation! Woot woot!

These next few months are going to be a bit hectic since I will have to find an apartment in our budget that will fit all (or most of) our stuff and our 3 cats, Atticus, Scout, and Boo Radley! All I know is that I am getting a head start and doing stuff each day (inch by inch) to get ready. I don’t want to be running around like a lunatic when it gets closer to the move date.

In the meantime, I will be writing posts on my progress and selling off as much of our stuff as I can! On that note, I will be selling all of my vintage closet (mcgregorgirl) at the Silverlake Flea Market next Saturday, April 13th. If you are in the area, stop by to say hello! Gary and I will be bringing everything from my shop and hundreds of other vintage goodies. Wish me luck!

Can’t Get Enough: Floral dresses

Spring is finally upon us (as of last week), and floral prints have been popping up everywhere. My favorite thing to wear anytime of year is a floral dress – with cozy accessories in fall and winter…with a light cardigan and wedge sandals in the spring and summer! Whether you’re going to a wedding, brunch, or a music festival….you’ll look chic if you’re in a lovely printed number!

Here are some to keep your eye on:

Can’t Get Enough: Colored Jeans

I am a sucker for a pop of color and colored jeans are JUST the thing to spice up any dull wardrobe. I recently bought bright green skinny ankle jeans from Madewell, and I want to wear them every day. They go with so much and add a little zest to a normal jeans &  t-shirt outfit. I prefer a skinny jean paired with a blous-y top and fun accessories, but I understand that not everyone loves them, so here are a few different styles depending on what YOU love!

Cozy Concerts with SoFar Sounds

I have often day dreamt of watching artists perform in intimate settings, and often envied those fortunate enough to attend secret shows. I was on the outside-looking-in before I discovered SoFar Sounds, the volunteer-based organization (started in London in 2009 ) that puts on private concerts in select living rooms all around the world each month (18 cities, to be exact). Advertised via word-of-mouth and social media, the concert series is a unique showcase for new (and not so new) local bands.

IMG_1961IMG_1972 IMG_1982 IMG_1969

Seats are limited and in-demand, but after months of futile attempts I was lucky enough to score an invite to the most recent performance in Los Angeles, held in a loft in the Warehouse District of downtown. Upon my arrival, I mingled with fellow concertgoers (unsurprisingly, a collection of cool indie folk) for 30 minutes, or so, before an MC welcomed everyone and urged us all to find our show-watching spot, which meant standing, sitting on the ground, or perched on a stool/chair/couch.

Each band (there were four — Baywood, The Herbert Bail Orchestra, Meg Myers, and Races) performed four songs, with a brief intermission in between, with the entire thing streamed live on SoFar’s Facebook page. The best part, music aside? NO ONE talked during the performances. Despite a buzzing pre-show atmosphere, the music that followed rang out loud and clear, uninhibited by chatter, allowed to fill every corner of the well-lit, considerately-decorated industrial setting.

Overall, the night was a success: cozy vibe, great music, cool people.

I cannot wait to attend many more SoFarLA’s to come (that is, if I get in!)

Can’t Get Enough: Peter Pan Collars

I cut my hair into a pixie cut about 2 weeks ago and boy what a change it has been! I absolutely adore it, but I feel a little boyish at times (even though I’m super curvy!) so I’ve had to dress more feminine to compensate! The most flattering cut (and cutest, btw) is anything with a peter pan collar. I’ve noticed this style frames my face just right and highlights my new hairdo in a sweet and girlish way.

Here are some of my favorite pieces!

Hip in the desert

IMG_1980

The hubs and I spent our New Years Eve at the uber hip Ace Hotel & swim club in Palm Springs with some friends.

I had heard of this “adult campground” since its arrival in the sleepy desert in 2009, but until now had never been. Overall, it has a hipster vibe with mid-century furnishings and a quirky staff (i.e. the singing hostess, Linda Gerard). Unfortunately, we were there for less than 24 hours and didn’t have the time to explore every corner of the hotel (the spa, the clubhouse, etc.), but it was fun to get lost in a world of hip perfection, where everything is an experience and in its right place. Right off the main road in Palm Springs proper, this hotel is central to the shops and restaurants if you feel like renting one of the hotel’s Vespas or bicycles to venture off the property.

IMG_1968

After doing a little research, I found out that the Ace Hotel chain (other locations include Seattle, Portland, and NYC) was started by the founders of the unisex hair salon, Rudy’s, so it makes perfect sense that the Palm Springs location has its aesthetic down to an art. Even more surprising is that the location used to house a Howard Johnson motel, and the adjoining diner was once a Denny’s now called King’s Highway, and not to be missed if you want some grub while staying here. If you’re a coffee lover, get a cup of the hotel’s delicious Stumptown Coffee and don’t forget to try the parmesan hash browns! So good!

IMG_1961 IMG_1963 IMG_1998

My previous experiences with Palm Springs were few and far between, but what I can recall are some pretty hilarious nights spent looking for something fun to do that didn’t require you to be in your sixties. Now with the Ace Hotel in place, a number of cool, new shops in the center of town, and the Coachella Valley Music Festival looming in the background, Palm Springs is now a happening place for twenty and thirty-somethings.

I can’t wait to go back and spend more time and sightsee in this town that is just a stone’s throw from Los Angeles.

Happy 2013 everyone!!

Tasty treats with Miss Maple LA

A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of spending an evening with the amazingly talented Jessica of Miss Maple. She and I baked gluten free & vegan treats for her to sell at the Bank of America farmers’ market downtown. To be honest, I have always been skeptical of gluten free/vegan items in the past, but for this night I put my worries aside and boy was I pleasantly surprised! Everything we made was delicious AND nutritious! I do declare, Jessica has something good going on.

Read on for her healthy granola recipe below!

Granola recipe:

1/2 cup coconut oil

3/4 cup maple syrup

1/2 cup brown rice flour

3/4 tsp salt

3 cups oats

3 TBSP chia mixed with 3 TBSP water

1/3 cup flax

1/3 cup sesame seeds

3/4 cup millet

3/4 cup chopped almonds

3/4 cup coconut

3/4 cup raisins

dash of cinnamon to taste

1-2 drops orange oil

pinch of lavender

pinch of rosemary

1 tsp. vanilla

Preheat oven to 300 degrees

Toast flax, sesame seeds, almonds, and millet for 20 minutes. Add coconut and toast 5 more minutes, or until brown. Meanwhile, combine water and chia and set aside. Whip coconut oil, and maple until fluffy (you can also substitute agave for maple.) Add chia mixture and brown rice flour and mix until combined. Add oats, salt, toasted dry mix, and raisins. Mix until combined.

Press mixture into baking sheet. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until edges start to brown. Let it cool completely (this is important for the right consistency.) Break up and store as flat as possible to prevent moisture. Granola can last up to a month if well stored!

Waiting for the yummy morsels to come out of the oven!

This would be the PERFECT hostess gift or just to have as a snack on christmas day! Bag up equal amounts in cute packaging and voila…you have something thoughtful and homemade to give to loved ones!
